 “Training Centers of Excellence”

Jon Strickler defines a COE as "A team of people that promote collaboration and using best practices around a specific focus area to drive business results."  In that context, Centers of Excellence (COEs) are gaining popularity among progressive companies as a way to share best practices, develop new business solutions, and drive internal projects.

During a time when companies face shrinking training budgets, it has become necessary for business leads and departments to take on increased training duties. This has changed the role of many training and development professionals from delivering training to supporting training and knowledge transfer processes.  Put another way, a Center of Excellence provides a focal point for knowledge development and dissemination and replaces an old-fashioned reliance on informal, word-of-mouth mechanisms (Karl Moore and Julian Birkinshaw).

This presentation will provide practical models and examples of how a Training Center of Excellence can benefit large and small organizations. It will also provide insight on structure, support, governance, and tools needed to move a Community of Practice beyond an informal network to ensure close alignment with company projects and PMO structure.
